Case Study: Revitalising A Product After Mid-Lifecycle Component Changes

We were approached to support a critical product used in the industrial security industry—an integrated solution combining a Raspberry Pi and IR detection. Originally, the IR system was powered via Power over Ethernet (PoE) via the network switch, streamlining the setup and reducing the need for separate power sources.

However, midway through the product’s lifecycle, the IR component supplier upgraded their hardware. The new version no longer supported PoE, effectively rendering the original power strategy unusable.

Our task was clear:

  • Develop a compact power system to replace the PoE functionality
  • Ensure it could automatically power on and off with the systems
  • Deliver a reliable 12V @ 2A output for over 3 hours
  • Require no user interaction

Our Solution

We engineered a smart battery-powered solution that integrates seamlessly with the existing system:

  • Battery Management System: We designed a battery pack and intelligent charging circuit that sits between the mains supply and the raspberry Pi’s PSU.
  • Automatic Control: The system is triggered via the Pi’s USB port—powering up when the Pi is turned on, and shutting down when it’s turned off, without any user intervention.
